DJ Comic Strip Character #28 By Bill Earl (August 1963)

This character was drawn in August 1963 at an umbrella table outside the Del Mar Racetrack grandstand in Del Mar CA by then 12-year-old Bill Earl, originally on blue pad paper bought earlier that day at F.S. Rasco 5, 10 & 25 store

in downtown Encinitas (now an internet cafe.) He patterned it loosely after the Del Mar mascot "Don Diego", and Dick Tracy's "Rughead" character with his matador toupee.
