Just might have happened.
BOBBY MITCHELL had been a hugely popular air talent at San Francisco's KYA for many years, and now in early 1967 was offered a shift in "The Big Room"... Los Angeles ... and it's "stage" ... 93/KHJ.
As he had ALWAYS been "Bobby Mitchell" on KYA, it was expected that "Boss Angeles" would get to know him as "Bobby Mitchell."
However, several months before Bobby's debut on KHJ, ANOTHER "B.J." JOHNNY MITCHELL had left KHJ.
In order to "not confuse" the audience with ANOTHER "Mitchell" debuting so close to the last one leaving, it was decided that Bobby use a different last name.
The name BOBBY TRIPP was created...and the rest is history.
